Here lies whom hound did ne er pursueA
Nor swiftewd greyhound followB
Whose foot ne er tainted morning dewA
Nor ear heard huntsman s halloB
-
Old Tiney surliest of his kindC
Who nurs d with tender careD
And to domestic bounds confin dE
Was still a wild Jack hareD
-
Though duly from my hand he tookF
His pittance ev ry nightG
He did it with a jealous lookF
And when he could would biteG
-
His diet was of wheaten breadH
And milk and oats and strawI
Thistles or lettuces insteadH
With sand to scour his mawI
-
On twigs of hawthorn he regal dE
On pippins russet peelB
And when his juicy salads fail dE
Slic d carrot pleas d him wellB
-
A Turkey carpet was his lawnJ
Whereon he lov d to boundK
To skip and gambol like a fawnJ
And swing his rump aroundK
-
His frisking wa at evening hoursL
For then he lost his fearM
But most before approaching show rsL
Or when a storm drew nearM
-
Eight years and five round rolling moonsL
He thus saw steal awayN
Dozing out all his idle noonsL
And ev ry night at playN
-
I kept him for his humour s sakeO
For he would oft beguileB
My heart of thoughts that made it acheO
And force me to a smileB
-
But now beneath this walnut shadeP
He finds his long last homeQ
And waits inn snug concealment laidP
Till gentler puss shall comeR
-
He still more aged feels the shocksL
From which no care can saveS
And partner once of Tiney s boxL
Must soon partake his graveS
