Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFGF HIHI JKLK MNMN LOJP QRQR

Thou hast no lightnings O thou JustA
Or I their force should knowB
And if thou strike me into dustA
My soul approves the blowB
-
The heart that values less its easeC
Than it adores thy waysD
In thine avenging anger seesC
A subject of its praiseD
-
Pleased I could lie concealed and lostE
In shades of central nightF
Not to avoid thy wrath thou know'stG
But lest I grieve thy sightF
-
Smite me O thou whom I provokeH
And I will love thee stillI
The well deserved and righteous strokeH
Shall please me though it killI
-
Am I not worthy to sustainJ
The worst thou canst deviseK
And dare I seek thy throne againL
And meet thy sacred eyesK
-
Far from afflicting thou art kindM
And in my saddest hoursN
An unction of thy grace I findM
Pervading all my powersN
-
Alas thou sparest me yet againL
And when thy wrath should moveO
Too gentle to endure my painJ
Thou soothest me with thy loveP
-
I have no punishment to fearQ
But ah that smile from theeR
Imparts a pang far more severeQ
Than woe itself would beR
