Believe it or not as you chooseA
The doctrine is certainly trueB
That the future is known to the museA
And poets are oracles tooB
I did but express a desireC
To see Catharina at homeD
At the side of my friend George's fireC
And lo she is actually comeE
-
-
Such prophecy some may despiseF
But the wish of a poet and friendG
Perhaps is approved in the skiesF
And therefore attains to its endG
'Twas a wish that flew ardently forthH
From a bosom effectually warm'dI
With the talents the graces and worthJ
Of the person for whom it was form'dI
-
-
Maria would leave us I knewB
To the grief and regret of us allK
But less to our grief could we viewB
Catharina the Queen of the HallK
And therefore I wish'd as I didL
And therefore this union of handsM
Not a whisper was heard to forbidL
But all cry Amen to the bansN
-
-
Since therefore I seem to incurC
No danger of wishing in vainO
When making good wishes for herC
I will e'en to my wishes againP
With one I have made her a wifeQ
And now I will try with anotherC
Which I cannot suppress for my lifeQ
How soon I can make her a motherC
