O THOU the Friend of Man assign'dA
With balmy Hands his Wounds to bindA
And charm his frantic WoeB
When first Distress with Dagger keenC
Broke forth to waste his destin'd SceneC
His wild unsated FoeB
-
-
-
By Pella's Bard a magic NameD
By all the Griefs his Thoughts could frameD
Receiue my humble RiteE
Long Pity let the Nations viewF
Thy sky worn Robes of tend'rest BlueF
And Eyes of dewy LightE
-
-
But wherefore need I wander wideG
To old Ilissus' distant SideG
Deserted Stream and muteH
Wild Arun too has heard thy StrainsI
And Echo 'midst my native PlainsI
Been sooth'd by Pity's LuteH
-
-
There first the Wren thy Myrtles shedJ
On gentlest Otway's infant HeadJ
To Him thy Cell was shownK
And while He sung the Female heartL
With Youth's soft Notes unspoil'd by ArtL
Thy Turtles mix'd their ownK
-
-
Come Pity come by Fancy's AidM
Ev'n now my Thoughts relenting MaidM
Thy Temple's Pride designN
Its Southern Site its Truth compleatM
Shall raise a wild Enthusiast HeatM
In all who view the ShrineN
-
-
There Picture's Toils shall well relateM
How Chance or hard involving FateM
O'er mortal Bliss prevailO
The Buskin'd Muse shall near her standM
And sighing prompt her tender HandM
With each disastrous TaleO
-
-
There let me oft retir'd by DayM
In Dreams of Pasion melt awayM
Allow'd with Thee to dwellP
There waste the mournful Lamp of NightM
Till Virgin Thou again delightM
To hear a British shellP
