Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGH IJKLMNOPQRQS TUVWXYZA2 B2VC2VPD2E2VVF2G2Q H2I2J2K2VL2PVM2VN2O2If aught of oaten stop or pastoral song | A |
May hope chaste Eve to soothe thy modest ear | B |
Like thy own solemn springs | C |
Thy springs and dying gales | D |
O nymph reserved while now the bright haired sun | E |
Sits in yon western tent whose cloudy skirts | F |
With brede ethereal wove | G |
O'erhang his wavy bed | H |
- | |
Now air is hushed save where the weak eyed bat | I |
With short shrill shriek flits by on leathern wing | J |
Or where the beetle winds | K |
His small but sullen horn | L |
As oft he rises 'midst the twilight path | M |
Against the pilgrim borne in heedless hum | N |
Now teach me maid composed | O |
To breathe some softened strain | P |
Whose numbers stealing through thy dark'ning vale | Q |
May not unseemly with its stillness suit | R |
As musing slow I hail | Q |
Thy genial loved return | S |
- | |
For when thy folding star arising shows | T |
His paly circlet at his warning lamp | U |
The fragrant hours and elves | V |
Who slept in buds the day | W |
And many a nymph who wreathes her brows with sedge | X |
And sheds the fresh'ning dew and lovelier still | Y |
The pensive pleasures sweet | Z |
Prepare thy shadowy car | A2 |
- | |
Then let me rove some wild and heathy scene | B2 |
Or find some ruin 'midst its dreary dells | V |
Whose walls more awful nod | C2 |
By thy religious gleams | V |
Or if chill blust'ring winds or driving rain | P |
Prevent my willing feet be mine the hut | D2 |
That from the mountain's side | E2 |
Views wilds and swelling floods | V |
And hamlets brown and dim discovered spires | V |
And hears their simple bell and marks o'er all | F2 |
Thy dewy fingers draw | G2 |
The gradual dusky veil | Q |
- | |
While Spring shall pour his showers as oft he wont | H2 |
And bathe thy breathing tresses meekest Eve | I2 |
While Summer loves to sport | J2 |
Beneath thy lingering light | K2 |
While sallow Autumn fills thy lap with leaves | V |
Or Winter yelling through the troublous air | L2 |
Affrights thy shrinking train | P |
And rudely rends thy robes | V |
So long regardful of thy quiet rule | M2 |
Shall fancy friendship science smiling peace | V |
Thy gentlest influence own | N2 |
And love thy favourite name | O2 |
