In The Downhill Of Life Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGDGD BHBHIDID AJAJKDKD

In the downhill of life when I find I'm decliningA
May my lot no less fortunate beB
Than a snug elbow chair can afford for recliningA
And a cot that o'erlooks the wide seaB
With an ambling pad pony to pace o'er the lawnC
While I carol away idle sorrowD
And blithe as the lark that each day hails the dawnC
Look forward with hope for tomorrowD
-
With a porch at my door both for shelter and shade tooE
As the sunshine or rain may prevailF
And a small spot of ground for the use of the spade tooE
With a barn for the use of the flailF
A cow for my dairy a dog for my gameG
And a purse when a friend wants to borrowD
I'll envy no Nabob his riches or fameG
Nor what honours may wait him tomorrowD
-
From the bleak northern blast may my cot be completelyB
Secured by a neighbouring hillH
And at night may repose steal upon me more sweetlyB
By the sound of a murmuring rillH
And while peace and plenty I find at my boardI
With a heart free from sickness and sorrowD
With my friends may I share what today may affordI
And let them spread the table tomorrowD
-
And when I at last must throw off this frail cov'ringA
Which I've worn for threescore years and tenJ
On the brink of the grave I'll not seek to keep hov'ringA
Nor my thread wish to spin o'er againJ
But my face in the glass I'll serenely surveyK
And with smiles count each wrinkle and furrowD
As this old worn out stuff which is threadbare todayK
May become everlasting tomorrowD
