Epode Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH HIHI

In earliest Grece to Thee with partial ChoiceA
The Grief full Muse addrest her infant TongueB
The Maids and Matrons on her awful VoiceA
Silent and pale in wild Amazement hungB
-
Yet he the Bard who first invok'd thy NameC
Disdain'd in Marathon its Pow'r to feelD
For not alone he nurs'd the Poet's flameC
But reach'd from Virtue's Hand the Patriot's SteelD
-
But who is He whom later Garlands graceE
Who left a while o'er Hybla's Dews to roveF
With trembling Eyes thy dreary Steps to traceE
Where Thou and Furies shar'd the baleful GroveF
-
Wrapt in thy cloudy Veil th' Incestuous QueenG
Sigh'd the sad Call her Son and Husband hear'dH
When once alone it broke the silent SceneG
And He the Wretch of Thebes no more appear'dH
-
O Fear I know Thee by my throbbing HeartH
Thy with'ring Pow'r inspir'd each mournful LineI
Tho' gentle Pity claim her mingled PartH
Yet all the Thunders of the Scene are thineI
