The sun descending in the westA
The evening star does shineB
The birds are silent in their nestA
And I must seek for mineB
The moon like a flowerC
In heavens high bowerC
With silent delightD
Sits and smiles on the nightD
-
Farewell green fields and happy grovesE
Where flocks have took delightD
Where lambs have nibbled silent movesF
The feet of angels brightD
Unseen they pour blessingG
And joy without ceasingG
On each bud and blossomH
And each sleeping bosomH
-
They look in every thoughtless nestA
Where birds are covered warmI
They visit caves of every beastJ
To keep them all from harmK
If they see any weepingG
That should have been sleepingG
They pour sleep on their headL
And sit down by their bedL
-
When wolves and tygers howl for preyM
They pitying stand and weepN
Seeking to drive their thirst awayM
And keep them from the sheepN
But if they rush dreadfulO
The angels most heedfulO
Receive each mild spiritP
New worlds to inheritP
-
And there the lions ruddy eyesQ
Shall flow with tears of goldR
And pitying the tender criesQ
And walking round the foldR
Saying wrath by his meeknessQ
And by his health sicknessQ
Is driven awayM
From our immortal dayM
-
And now beside thee bleating lambS
I can lie down and sleepN
Or think on him who bore thy nameT
Graze after thee and weepN
For wash'd in lifes riverC
My bright mane for everC
Shall shine like the goldR
As I guard o'er the foldR
