The bell struck one and shook the silent towerA
The graves give up their dead fair ElenorA
Walk'd by the castle gate and look d inB
A hollow groan ran thro' the dreary vaultsC
She shriek'd aloud and sunk upon the stepsD
On the cold stone her pale cheeks Sickly smellsE
Of death issue as from a sepulchreA
And all is silent but the sighing vaultsC
-
Chill Death withdraws his hand and she revivesF
Amaz'd she finds herself upon her feetG
And like a ghost thro' narrow passagesH
Walking feeling the cold walls with her handsI
-
Fancy returns and now she thinks of bonesJ
And grinning skulls and corruptible deathK
Wrapp'd in his shroud and now fancies she hearsL
Deep sighs and sees pale sickly ghosts glidingM
-
At length no fancy but realityN
Distracts her A rushing sound and the feetG
Of one that fled approaches Ellen stoodO
Like a dumb statue froze to stone with fearA
-
The wretch approaches crying The deed is doneP
Take this and send it by whom thou wilt sendQ
It is my life send it to ElenorA
He's dead and howling after me for bloodR
-
Take this ' he cried and thrust into her armsS
A wet napkin wrapp'd about then rush'dT
Past howling she receiv'd into her armsS
Pale death and follow'd on the wings of fearA
-
They pass'd swift thro' the outer gate the wretchU
Howling leap'd o'er the wall into the moatV
Stifling in mud Fair Ellen pass'd the bridgeW
And heard a gloomy voice cry Is it done '-
-
As the deer wounded Ellen flew overA
The pathless plain as the arrows that flyX
By night destruction flies and strikes in darknessY
She fled from fear till at her house arriv'dZ
-
Her maids await her on her bed she fallsA2
That bed of joy where erst her lord hath press'dB2
Ah woman's fear ' she cried ah curs d dukeC2
Ah my dear lord ah wretched ElenorA
-
My lord was like a flower upon the browsD2
Of lusty May Ah life as frail as flowerA
O ghastly death withdraw thy cruel handE2
Seek'st thou that flow'r to deck thy horrid templesF2
-
My lord was like a star in highest heav'nP
Drawn down to earth by spells and wickednessY
My lord was like the opening eyes of dayG2
When western winds creep softly o'er the flowersH2
-
But he is darken'd like the summer's noonP
Clouded fall'n like the stately tree cut downP
The breath of heaven dwelt among his leavesI2
O Elenor weak woman fill'd with woe '-
-
Thus having spoke she rais d up her headJ2
And saw the bloody napkin by her sideK2
Which in her arms she brought and now tenfoldL2
More terrifi d saw it unfold itselfM2
-
Her eyes were fix'd the bloody cloth unfoldsN2
Disclosing to her sight the murder'd headJ2
Of her dear lord all ghastly pale clottedR
With gory blood it groan'd and thus it spakeO2
-
O Elenor I am thy husband's headJ2
Who sleeping on the stones of yonder towerA
Was 'reft of life by the accurs d dukeC2
A hir d villain turn'd my sleep to deathK
-
O Elenor beware the curs d dukeC2
O give not him thy hand now I am deadJ2
He seeks thy love who coward in the nightP2
Hir d a villain to bereave my life '-
-
She sat with dead cold limbs stiffen'd to stoneP
She took the gory head up in her armsS
She kiss'd the pale lips she had no tears to shedJ2
She hugg'd it to her breast and groan'd her lastQ2
