Ah sad wer we as we did peaceA
the wold church road wi' downcast feaceA
the while the bells that mwoaned so deepB
above our child a left asleepB
wer now a zingen all aliveC
wi' t'other bells to meake the viveD
But up at woone pleace we come byE
t'wer hard to keep woone's two eyes dryE
on Stean cliff road 'ithin the drongF
up where as vo'k do pass alongF
the turnen stile a painted whiteG
do sheen by day an' show by nightG
Vor always there as we did gooF
to church thik stile did let us droughD
wi' spreaden arms that wheeled to guideH
us each in turn to t'other zideH
An' vu'st ov all the train he tookF
my wife wi' winsome gait an' lookF
An' then zent on my little maidH
a skippen onward overjay'dH
to reach agean the pleace o' prideH
her comely mother's left han' zideH
An' then a wheelen roun' he tookF
on me 'ithin his third white nookF
An' in the fourth a sheaken wildH
he zent us on our giddy childH
But eesterday he guided slowI
my downcast Jenny vull o' woeI
an' then my little maid in blackF
a walken softly on her trackF
An' after he'd a turned ageanJ
to let me goo along the leaneJ
he had noo little bwoy to villI
his last white earms an' they stood stillI
