A happy day at WhitsuntideA
As soon 's the zun begun to vallB
We all stroll'd up the steep hill zideA
To Meldon gret an' smallB
Out where the Castle wall stood highC
A mwoldren to the zunny skyC
-
An' there wi' Jenny took a strollB
Her youngest sister Poll so gayD
Bezide John Hind ah merry soulB
An' mid her wedlock fayD
An' at our zides did play an' runE
My little maid an' smaller sonE
-
Above the baten mwold upsprungD
The driven doust a spreaden lightA
An' on the new leav'd thorn a hungD
Wer wool a quiv'ren whiteA
An' corn a sheenen bright did bowF
On slopen Meldon's zunny browF
-
There down the roofless wall did glowB
The zun upon the grassy vloorF
An' weakly wandren winds did blowB
Unhinder'd by a doorF
An' smokeless now avore the zunE
Did stan' the ivy girded tunE
-
My bwoy did watch the daws' bright wingsG
A flappen vrom their ivy bow'rsG
My wife did watch my maid's light springsG
Out here an' there vor flow'rsG
And John did zee noo tow'rs the placeG
Vor him had only Polly's faceG
-
An' there of all that pried aboutA
The walls I overlook'd em bestA
An' what o' that Why I made outA
Noo mwore than all the restA
That there wer woonce the nest of zomeH
That wer a gone avore we comeH
-
When woonce above the tun the smokeD
Did wreathy blue among the treesG
An' down below the liven vo'kD
Did tweil as brisk as beesG
Or zit wi' weary knees the whileB
The sky wer lightless to their tweilB
