How can the makers of unrighteous warsA
Stand the accusal of the watchful starsB
-
To standC
A dust speck facing the infinitudesB
Of Thine unfathomable dome a night like thisB
To stand full face to Thy High MajestiesB
Thy myriad worlds in solemn watchfulnessB
Watching watching watching all belowD
And man in all his wilfulness for woeD
Dear Lord one wonders that Thou bearest stillE
With man on whom Thou didst such grace bestowD
And with his wilful faculty for woeD
-
Those sleepless sentinels They may be worldsB
All peopled like our own But as I standC
They are to me the myriad eyes of GodF
Watching watching watching all belowD
And man in all his wilfulness for woeD
And then to thinkG
What those same piercing eyes look down uponH
Elsewhere on this fair earth that Thou hast madeI
Watching watching watching all belowD
And man in all his wilfulness for woeD
-
On all the desolations he hath wroughtJ
On all the passioned hatreds he hath taughtJ
On all Thy great hopes he hath brought to noughtJ
Man rending man with ruthless bitternessB
Blasting Thine image into nothingnessB
Hounding Thy innocents to awful deathsB
And worse than deaths Happy the dead who spedJ
Before the torturers their lust had fedJ
On Thy Christ crucified afresh each dayJ
On all the horrors of War's grim red wayJ
And ever in Thy solemn midnight skiesB
Those myriad sleepless vast accusing eyesB
Watching watching watching all belowD
And man in all his wilfulness for woeD
-
Dear LordJ
When in our troubled hearts we ponder thisB
We can but wonder at Thy wrath delayedJ
We can but wonder that Thy hand is stayedJ
We can but wonder at Thy sufferanceB
Of man whom Thou in Thine own image madeJ
When he that image doth so sore degradeJ
-
If Thou shouldst blot us out without a wordJ
Our stricken souls must say we had incurredJ
Just punishmentJ
Warnings we lacked not warnings oft and clearK
But in our arrogance we gave no earL
To Thine admonishmentJ
And yet and yet O Lord we humbly prayJ
Put back again Thy righteous Judgment DayJ
Have patience with us yet a while untilE
Through these our sufferings we learn Thy WillE
