With Esther Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEAEFGFHII JKJKLMNMCOCOPP

He who has once been happy is for ayeA
Out of destruction's reach His fortune thenB
Holds nothing secret and EternityC
Which is a mystery to other menB
Has like a woman given him its joyD
Time is his conquest Life if it should fretE
Has paid him tribute He can bear to dieA
He who has once been happy When I setE
The world before me and survey its rangeF
Its mean ambitions its scant fantasiesG
The shreds of pleasure which for lack of changeF
Men wrap around them and call happinessH
The poor delights which are the tale and sumI
Of the world's courage in its martyrdomI
-
When I hear laughter from a tavern doorJ
When I see crowds agape and in the rainK
Watching on tiptoe and with stifled roarJ
To see a rocket fired or a bull slainK
When misers handle gold when oratorsL
Touch strong men's hearts with glory till they weepM
When cities deck their streets for barren warsN
Which have laid waste their youth and when I keepM
Calmly the count of my own life and seeC
On what poor stuff my manhood's dreams were fedO
Till I too learn'd what dole of vanityC
Will serve a human soul for daily breadO
Then I remember that I once was youngP
And lived with Esther the world's gods amongP
