In the antechamber of Heaven Satan walks alone Angels in groups conversingA
Satan To day is the Lord's day '' Once more on His good pleasureB
I the Heresiarch wait and pace these halls at leisureB
Among the Orthodox the unfallen Sons of GodC
How sweet in truth Heaven is its floors of sandal woodD
Its old world furniture its linen long in pressE
Its incense mummeries flowers its scent of holinessF
Each house has its own smell The smell of Heaven to meG
Intoxicates and haunts and hurts Who would not beG
God's liveried servant here the slave of His behestH
Rather than reign outside I like good things the bestH
Fair things things innocent and gladly if He willedI
Would enter His Saints' kingdom even as a little childJ
-
Laughs I have come to make my peace to crave a full amaunK
Peace pardon reconcilement truce to our daggers drawnK
Which have so long distraught the fair wise UniverseL
An end to my rebellion and the mortal curseL
Of always evil doing He will mayhap agreeG
I was less wholly wrong about HumanityG
The day I dared to warn His wisdom of that flawM
It was at least the truth the whole truth I foresawM
When He must needs create that simian in His ownK
Image and likeness '' Faugh the unseemly carrionK
I claim a new revision and with proofs in handN
No Job now in my path to foil me and withstandN
Oh I will serve Him wellO
Certain Angels approach But who are these that comeP
With their grieved faces pale and eyes of martyrdomP
Not our good Sons of God They stop gesticulateN
Argue apart some weep weep here within Heaven's gateN
Sob almost in God's sight ay real salt human tearsQ
Such as no Spirit wept these thrice three thousand yearsR
The last shed were my own that night of reprobationK
When I unsheathed my sword and headed the lost nationK
Since then not one of them has spoken above his breathS
Or whispered in these courts one word of life or deathS
Displeasing to the Lord No Seraph of them allT
Save I this day each year has dared to cross Heaven's hallT
And give voice to ill news an unwelcome truth to HimU
Not Michael's self hath dared prince of the SeraphimU
Yet all now wail aloud What ails ye brethren SpeakV
Are ye too in rebellion Angels Satan no But weakV
With our long earthly toil the unthankful care of ManK
-
Satan Ye have in truth good causeW
-
Angels And we would know God's planK
His true thought for the world the wherefore and the whyX
Of His long patience mocked His name in jeopardyN
We have no heart to serve without instructions newK
-
Satan Ye have made a late discoveryN
-
Angels There is no rain no dewK
No watering of God's grace that can make green Man's heartN
Or draw him nearer Heaven to play a godlier partN
Our service has grown vain We have no rest nor sleepY
The Earth's cry is too loudN
-
Satan Ye have all cause to weepY
Since you depend on Man I told it and foretoldN
-
Angels Truly thou didstN
-
Satan Dear fools But have ye heart to holdN
Such plaint before the Lord to apprise Him of this thingA
In its full naked fact and call your reckoningA
-
Angels We dare not face His frown He lives in ignoranceZ
His pride is in His Earth If He but looks askanceA2
We tremble and grow dumbU
-
Satan And ye will bear it thenK
-
Angels We dare not grieve His peace He loves this race of menK
-
Satan The truth should hardly grieveB2
-
Angels He would count it us for prideN
He holds Mankind redeemed since His Son stooped and diedN
We dare not ventureB
-
Satan See I have less than you to loseC2
Give me your briefD2
-
Angels Ay speak Thee He will not refuseC2
Mayhap thou shalt persuade HimU
-
Satan And withal find graceE2
The Lord is a just God He will rejudge this caseE2
Ay haply even mine O glorious occasionK
To champion Heaven's whole right without shift or evasionK
And plead the Angels' cause Take courage my sad heartN
Thine hour hath come to thee to play this worthiest partN
And prove thy right thine too to Heaven's moralitiesE2
Not worse than these that wait only alas more wiseE2
-
Angels Hush Silence The Lord GodN
-
Entereth the Lord God to whom the Angels minister He taketh His seat upon the throneK
The Lord God Thank ye My servants allT
Thank ye good Seraphim To all and severalF2
Sons of the House God's blessingA
-
aside who ne'er gave God painK
Impeccable white Spirits tell Me once againK
How goeth it with the World My ordered UniverseE2
My Powers and Dominations Michael thou rehearseE2
The glory of the Heavens Tell Me star and starG2
Do they still sing together in their spheres afarG2
Have they their speech their language Are their voices heardN
-
Michael All's well with the World Each morn as bird to answering birdN
The Stars shout in Thy glory praise unchanged yet newK
They magnify Thy nameU
-
The Lord God Truth's self were else untrueK
Time needs be optimist nor foul its own abodeN
Else were Creation mockedN
aside and haply I not GodN
In sooth all's well with the World And thou My RaphaelO
How fare the Spirit hosts Say is thy world too wellO
-
Raphael All's well with the World We stand as aye obedientN
We have no thought but Thee no asking no intentN
More than to laud and worship O most mercifulF2
Being of those that waitN
-
SatanK
aside The contemplative ruleH2
Out ministers the active These have right to boastN
Who stand aye in His presence beyond the Angel hostN
-
The Lord God And none of ye grow wearyN
-
Raphael Nay in truthI2
-
The Lord God Not oneK
-
SatanK
aside God is a jealous God He doubteth themU
-
Raphael Nay noneK
We are not as the AngelsE2
-
The Lord God These have their devoirsE2
The search the novelty Ye drowse here in your choirsE2
Sleep walkers all while these glad messengers go forthJ2
Upon new joyous errands Earthwards South and NorthJ2
To visit men and cities What is strange as ManK
What fair as his green Globe in all Creation's planK
What ordered as his march of life of mind of willK2
What subtle as his conscience set at grips with illK2
Their service needs no sleep who guide Man's destiniesE2
-
After a pause Speak Gabriel thou the last Is Man grown grand andwiseE2
Hath he his place on Earth prince of Time's fashioningsE2
Noblest and fairest found the roof and crown of thingsE2
Is the World joyful all in his most perfect joyL2
Hath the good triumphed tell o'er pain and Time's annoyL2
Since Our Son died who taught the way of perfect peaceE2
Thou knowest it how I love these dear HumanitiesE2
Is all quite well with ManK
-
Gabriel All's well with the World ay wellO
All's well enough with ManK
-
SatanK
aside Alas poor GabrielF2
-
The Lord God How meanest thou enough'' Man holdeth then Earth's seatN
Master of living things He mild is and discreetN
Supreme in My Son's peace The Earth is comfortedN
With its long rest from toil nor goeth aught in dreadN
Seeing all wars have ceased the mad wars of old timeU
The lion and the lamb lie down in every climeU
There is no strife for gold for place for dignitiesE2
All holding My Son's creed The last fool hath grown wiseE2
He hath renounced his gods the things of wood and stoneK
-
Gabriel The Christian name prevaileth Its dominionK
Groweth in all the land From Candia to CathayM2
The fear of Christ is spread and wide through AfricaN2
-
The Lord God The fear And not the loveO2
-
Gabriel Who knoweth Man's heart All bowP2
And all proclaim His might The manner and the howP2
It were less safe to argue since some frailties beN
We take the outward act to prove conformityN
All's well enough with Man most well with ChristendomU
-
The Lord God Again thou sayest enough '' How fareth it in RomeU
Hath My vicegerent restN
-
Gabriel He sitteth as of oldN
Enthroned in Peter's chair with glories manifoldN
He sang a mass this morning and I heard his prayerQ2
-
The Lord God For PeaceE2
