My only title to her graceA
Is her sad too silent faceA
All my right to call her mineB
The twin tears that on it shineB
Tears that tell of griefs long hidC
In the shadows of each lidC
And of doubts that wound her soreD
Our twin lives shall meet no moreD
Nay my right and title thisE
That she gave me one shy kissE
'Twixt the dawning and the dayF
Benediction on my wayF
When the vain world was asleepG
And no ear to hear us weepG
And that once my fingers pressedH
The warm treasures of her breastH
Just a moment and the truthI
Learned of her close hidden youthI
With its joys and sweetnessesE
Deep beyond all wit to guessE
All but mine and what might beJ
Were she wholly joined with meJ
-
-
Such my title is and treasureK
Such my glory beyond measureK
Such my thought for the new yearsE
Burdened with what doubts and fearsE
Yet one day to claim her mineB
Here beyond this shadowy RhineB
Far from her and journeying stillL
Feel I her young pulses thrillL
Her warm body nestled closeE
To my own with all its woesE
And I know that some far hourK
I shall call to her with powerK
When the sun is fast in prisonM
And the midnight stars have risenM
Clear and kind in a warm skyN
And the shepherd's hour is nighN
In a language she shall heedO
Life is fleeting love hath needO
Time it is tears should not beJ
Come my love and dwell with me ''-
And I know that without stayF
'Twixt the dawning and the dayF
When the vain world is asleepG
And no ear to hear her weepG
She shall dry her tears and comeP
And we too through ChristendomP
And beyond this shadowy RhineB
With its fields of corn and wineB
And the snow clad Alps and RomeQ
And the blue sea capped with foamQ
And far famed ConstantinopleR
With its domes of pearl and opalR
And the sea of MarmoraK
Where the dolphins sport and playF
And the utmost isles of GreeceE
Guarding still their golden fleeceE
As when Paris to them cameS
With his Helen all aflameS
On their glorious honeymoonT
And so on from noon to noonT
Journeying still and still beyondU
Fond as they and yet more fondU
To the ancient tearless EastV
Shall be borne as to a feastV
And sit down there our lives longW
With Love's silence for our songW
And Love's guile for our disguiseE
While I teach her to be wiseE
And my title to her graceE
Shall the smiles be on her faceE
Her blue eyes where no tears beJ
Being wholly joined with meJ
