Esther, A Sonnet Sequence: Xvi Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCDEFEFGG

Oh 'tis a terrible thing in early youthA
To be assailed by laughter and mute shameB
A terrible thing to be befooled forsoothA
By one's own foolish face betrayed in flameB
The little traitor when she saw me dumbC
Went on to clap her hands till all and eachD
Took up the jest and called on me to comeC
And prove my courage in the manly breachD
The imperious queen stood waiting for me thereE
Pointing and beckoning and the crowd closed inF
Under the cover of a wilder airE
From the brass band the darkness and the dinF
I know not how it was in fear or funG
I touched that monster's knee and all was doneG
