Esther, A Sonnet Sequence: Xlv Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABACDEDEFGHHII

I followed dumb and shrinking like a thiefA
Close in her shadow from the women's guessB
Yet ruthlessly betrayed for my cheeks' griefA
From head to foot in the tall pier glassesC
My vagabond attire my coat all ragsD
My tattered plaid stained with the summer's dustE
The sash which bound my waist all gaps and jagsD
With gaiters frayed and such sad shoes as mustE
Have served Ulysses at his journey's closeF
All these I saw revealed to my disgraceG
My hat still crowned with its last Alpine roseH
And what she had called my John the Baptist's face''H
Red with confusion and the rage of youthI
I saw it all the whole remorseless truthI
