Esther, A Sonnet Sequence: Xliv Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCDEFEGHH

We came at last alas I see it yetA
With its open windows on the upper floorB
To a certain house still stirring with lights setA
And just a chink left open of the doorB
Here my companion stopped and bade me inC
Her dressmaker's she said And I who heardD
A sound of women's voices from withinC
Shrank back alarmed and ready at a wordD
From any damsel stoutly to denyE
But Madame Blanche '' she said to ease my fearsF
Is a good soul and far too wise to pryE
Or fancy evil of her customersG
At any hour of the night they choose to comeH
Much less of me '' And so I followed dumbH
