Esther, A Sonnet Sequence: Xix Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABACDEDEFGFGHI

I fled the booth with feelings as of CainA
Yet laughing at my own bewildermentB
My cheeks had blushed till it was physical painA
And my eyes smarted Through my head there wentC
The little woman's last appealing wordD
Bidding me stop in tones that smote afreshE
And 'twixt my finger and thumb there throbbed and stirredD
The semblance of that monstrous pound of fleshE
The knee that I had handled With it tooF
The jet beads of the little woman's skirtG
Where I had held her left an impress newF
And touched my conscience to a deeper hurtG
I was ashamed of all with shame intenseH
My youth my frailty and my innocenceI
