Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCDEFEGHH| An instant just an instant and no more | A |
| And it was gone and I with eyes unsealed | B |
| Saw the bald pageant stripped to its thought's core | A |
| And naked there to my scared eyes revealed | B |
| Upon a throne which filled the upper space | C |
| Two female monsters sat the first a girl | D |
| Marked like a leopard with pied arms and face | C |
| And restless eyes aflame and teeth of pearl | D |
| Her as we ventured near I heard awhile | E |
| Say she was hungry and a gleam like blood | F |
| Lighted her lips and died in a fierce smile | E |
| A woman's hand behind me in the crowd | G |
| Clutched at my arm and through the booth there went | H |
| A shiver of half fear half merriment | H |
