Esther, A Sonnet Sequence: Li Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDEDFGFGHH

When I hear laughter from a tavern doorA
When I see crowds agape and in the rainB
Watching on tiptoe and with stifled roarA
To see a rocket fired or a bull slainB
When misers handle gold when oratorsC
Touch strong men's hearts with glory till they weepD
When cities deck their streets for barren warsE
Which have laid waste their youth and when I keepD
Calmly the count of my own life and seeF
On what poor stuff my manhood's dreams were fedG
Till I too learned what dole of vanityF
Will serve a human soul for daily breadG
Then I remember that I once was youngH
And lived with Esther the world's gods amongH
