Esther, A Sonnet Sequence: I Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABACBDBEFGHGIIWhen is life other than a tragedy | A |
Whether it is played in tears from the first scene | B |
In sable robes and grief's mute pageantry | A |
For loves that died ere they had ever been | C |
Or whether on the edge of joys set keen | B |
While all the stage with laughter is agog | D |
Death stepping forward with an altered mien | B |
Pulls off his mask and speaks the epilogue | E |
Life is a play acted by dying men | F |
Where if its heroes seem to foot it well | G |
And go light tongued without grimace of pain | H |
Death will be found anon And who shall tell | G |
Which part was saddest or in youth or age | I |
When the tired actor stops and leaves the stage | I |
