THE NEW RESOLVEB
-
Last night as I sat in my studyC
And thought o'er my lonely lifeD
I was seized with a passionate longingE
To escape from the weary strifeD
-
To flee far away from my fellowsF
And far from the city's roarG
And seek on the boundless prairieC
A balm for my burning soreG
-
The sore of the weary spiritH
The burn of the aching heartI
Of him who has known true friendshipJ
Has known it but only to partI
-
And I said in that hour of anguishK
I will fly from the haunts of menL
And seek in the bosom of NatureM
Relief from my ceaseless painN
-
As lonely I sat and thus ponderedO
A voice seemed to speak in my earP
And the sound of that voice was like musicQ
And its accents were mellow and clearR
-
Weary soul though all men have forsakenS
Thy God hath remembered thee stillT
The sorrow and pain thou hast sufferedO
Are part of His infinite willT
-
Sorrow not though He call thee to sufferM
Evade not His righteous decreeC
Be faithful and live uncomplainingQ
The life He has ordered for theeC
-
For God is thine infinite FatherM
His purpose is all for the bestU
Fight bravely for after the battleV
He giveth thee comfort and restU
-
And the sound of that voice was like musicQ
And its accents were mellow and clearR
No longer I felt I was lonelyC
For I knew that my Father was nearR
-
And as I sat silent and ponderedO
My sorrow all vanished awayW
My strength was renewed like the eagle'sX
And I longed for the breaking of dayW
-
That again I might join in Life's battleV
And fight with a strength not my ownY
Till my foes should be vanquished and scatteredO
My enemies all overthrownY
-
For thus would I silence all scoffersX
And show them by deed and by wordO
How strong is the faith of a ChristianS
How mighty the arm of the LordZ

THE HIGHER DUTYC
-
I saw the sun He shone in splendour brightA2
Casting his radiance over dale and hillT
And all creation joyed to see his lightA2
He shone and thus fulfilled his Master's willT
-
I saw the moon and stars They gave their lightA2
To guide the sailor o'er the trackless seaC
To show the traveller his path by nightA2
They shone fulfilling all their Lord's decreeC
-
I looked to earth and saw the plants and treesX
Each growing fitly to the pattern madeB2
And yielding proper flowers and fruits And theseX
All grew and thus their Master's will obeyedB2
-
I looked around and saw my fellow menL
Created by the same Almighty handC2
A higher destiny was granted themD2
To rule the earth obeying His commandC2
-
And as I looked the vision grew less brightA2
And only through the darkness could I seeC
That in their power and God given mightA2
Men ruled fulfilling half their Lord's decreeC
-
Here was much chaos and confusion stillT
And here no perfect concord seemed to beC
Each lived as best accorded with his willT
Men ruled all heedless of their Lord's decreeC
-
And as I looked deep sorrow filled my heartI
Oh man I cried in God's own image madeB2
Shall sun and moon and trees all do their partI
And thou alone fall short and retrogradeB2
-
Thou greatest of all God's created thingsX
Thou ruler by His order of the earthE2
Shake off thy sin and on aspiring wingsX
Rise and be worthy of thy glorious birthE2
-
I cried and from the darkness forth there cameF2
A voice which said in harsh and mocking toneY
Dost thou possess so undefiled a nameF2
Art thou amongst thy fellows good aloneY
-
That thou shouldst vilify thy fellow menL
Thou art not innocent nor free from guileG2
Thou too art man Go nor return againL
Sinful thy fellow sinners to revileG2
-
It ceased But as I turned to join the strifeD
In milder accents spake that voice againL
An humble heart a pure and useful lifeD
And not vain words will raise thy fellow menL

THE HIDDEN PURPOSEX
-
I was weary and faint with temptation and trialV
For the prayers I had made had but met with denialV
And the slow coming doubt which had once hardly foundH2
In my heart a mean place was now strong and profoundH2
-
And my soul was in anguish for suffering keenI2
And intense disappointment too often had beenJ2
New prepared for my portion till now as I layW
By new sorrow re stung all my faith passed awayW
-
Then a curse on my lips rose and darkly I sworeG
That the God who had led me should lead me no moreG
His existence was doubtful but if He should beC
He had been but a God of vindiction to meC
-
So I vowed that henceforward the path that I trodK2
Should be chosen by me and not ordered by GodK2
And relief seemed to greet my resolve as I layW
All in sleeplessness waiting the breaking of dayW
-
But as quiet I lay and thought o'er my decisionS
All my wakefulness passed and I saw in a visionS
By my side standing closely an Angel of LightA2
Clothed in shining apparel resplendently brightA2
-
And I lay there all trembling in fear as I layW
Till with beckoning finger he led me awayW
Then I rose and went forth in the darkness of nightA2
And still trembling I followed that Angel of LightA2
-
And I followed him on till he paused in his flightA2
Where a Christian lay sleeplessly passing the nightA2
And I heard him repeat as he lay on his bedL2
My paths are divided Lord which shall I treadL2
-
And I saw that the one led to glory and fameF2
While the other fulfilled not his heart cherished aimF2
But the scales of mortality darkened his eyeA
And the thing I saw plainly he could not descryG
-
Then the Angel breathed o'er him and light seemed to breakQ
O'er his soul and he saw then the path he should takeQ
Then his spirit was eased and sweet sleep o'er him cameF2
For he thought this would lead him to glory and fameF2
-
But I saw that the path he had chosen that dayW
Would lead him from glory and fame far awayW
But I saw too that were he not led in this pathM2
The love of the world would have shaken his faithN2
-
For his pride swelling high in the glory of gainN
Would have led him from God to things sinful and vainN
But his trouble would lead him to God now for restU
And I saw that the plan of his Maker was bestU
-
Then the Angel went forth and I followed him stillT
Thus impelled by the force of his Heavenly willT
Till he stayed where two lovers stood breathing their vowsX
With the fondness that love and deep passion arouseX
-
Then he put forth his hand and he pointed in wrathM2
And the fever fiend rose with a horrible laughO2
But the man felt him not as he poisoned his bloodP2
And the woman saw nought as still smiling she stoodQ2
-
But I knew that that meeting was surely their lastR2
For the shadow of death on the man was now castR2
And my heart could but pity the woman whose painN
I yet knew would redound to her infinite gainN
-
For deception and falsity deep in the heartI
Of the man were writ large and there truth had no partI
And the pain of her mourning was nought when comparedS2
With the agony he would have caused her if sparedS2
-
Quickly onward then hasted the Angel of GodK2
And I still followed close in the steps that he trodK2
And I saw when his flight was arrested againL
That we stood where an infant lay tossing in painN
-
And the mother with tear laden eyes kneeling thereG
Sought relief from her trouble in heart broken prayerG
As she cried unto God in a piteous toneY
That He would not deny her the life of her sonS
-
And the Angel himself breathed a sorrowful sighA
And I thought that a tear glistened bright in his eyeA
As he stretched forth his hand and commanded the soulT2
Of the child to ascend to its Heavenly goalT2
-
Then I heard a loud cry of distress on the airG
And I saw the lone mother lie grief stricken thereG
And the tears of compassion flowed fast from my eyesX
Though I knew that God's action was kindly and wiseX
-
For disease on the child had imprinted its stainN
And his life would have been but a long endured painN
Had his Father not early exerted His mightA2
And thus called the young soul to the Kingdom of LightA2
-
Then the scene seemed to melt in the darkness awayW
And again on the couch in my chamber I layW
And the Angel of God by my side again stoodQ2
And he gazed on me sadly and said God is goodQ2
-
Then I saw him no more but with morn I awokeQ
And remembered the words that the Angel had spokeQ
And the scenes of the vision repictured againL
Passed before me and brought me a balm for my painN
-
For I knew that my God had not called me in vainN
To temptation and trial and I would not complainN
But with gladness I went forth anew to the strifeD
Knowing now that my Father was guiding my lifeD
