So you think you will be a Scotch lassieA
The braw Hieland lad in a kiltB
Has taken your fancy dear has heA
And you too would be clad in a tiltB
-
Well not one will gainsay you nor blame youC
For your wishes are ever fulfiltB
And how proudly your father will claim youC
When arrayed in a tartan and tiltB
-
And your mother will certainly furtherD
The hopes that her Ethel has builtB
You have only to ask to ensure theirE
Fulfilment concerning the tiltB
-
And I Oh I know I don't count dearF
And for speaking acknowledge my guiltB
For my wishes to nothing amount dearF
I would rather you hadn't a tiltB
-
For although thou wilt take us by storm dearF
Looking sweet as thou certainly wiltB
Yet you know it is very bad form dearF
And not English to wish for a tiltB
-
And I thought but of course was mistakenG
For my hopes lie around me all spiltB
That my Ethel would never awakenG
To sigh for a Hielander's tiltB
-
None the less will I try to be glad thenH
Nor let courtesy play me the jiltB
Though I know that my heart will be sad whenH
Little Ethel is wearing her tiltB
