O'er the wide world I wander evermoreA
Through wind and weather heedless and aloneB
Alike through summer and through winter hoarA
On cloud capt mountain by the sea wash'd shoreA
Seeking the star that riseth in the EastC
-
O'er the wide world the world that knows not whyD
And stares with stupid scorn to see me goE
Whilst I with solemn secret face pass byD
To laugh in desert spots where none are nighD
Laugh loud and shrill unto the winds Ho HoE
For that which none but I and it do knowE
-
To think how when I find this lucky starF
And stand beneath it like the Wise of oldG
I shall mount upward on a golden carF
Girt round with glory unto worlds afarF
While Earth amazed the wonder shall beholdG
That bears me unto happiness untoldG
-
Hush I'll not whisper it lest some should hearH
And hurry on before me to the spotI
Leaving me bound for ever to this sphereJ
Parted for ever from my child I hereH
She in the realm that I could enter notI
-
Hush I must hurry on for many nightsK
Have I sought for the star about the skyD
And found it not amid the myriad lightsK
Greater and lesser with their satellitesK
Flashing confusedly upon mine eyeD
-
I must unravel every golden hairL
Upon the brow of Night for what I seekM
Lift every straggler from its moony lairL
Lest too the star should haply linger thereL
Unnoted by mine eyes so faint and weakM
-
For as the Wise Men did in old time traceN
The Holy Child by this same guiding starF
So I know well that by the Virgin's graceN
I too by it shall come unto the placeN
Where my sweet babe and its nurse angels areF
-
Wearisome are the days they mock me soE
Pouring down light that seems to bid me seeO
Yet hides the starry pilot by its glowE
Whose light I thirst for whilst light fountains flowE
Around me like the swelling of the seaO
-
Wearisome are they till the sun god palesP
Beneath the surges of the western waveQ
And the last fold of his golden mantle trailsP
O'er the horizon where Earth's vision failsP
And space becomes a darkness and a graveQ
-
I ofttimes think to curse the Day that triesR
To keep my babe hid in its envious breastS
Smit with its hair of gold and large blue eyesR
Close hid within its mantle careless of my sighsR
That night and day must wake it from its restS
-
But Patience when the sun is in the deepT
The Star will beam upon me suddenlyO
And ere the sun god waketh from his sleepT
The dear one shall be mine for whom I weepT
Mine mine alone for all eternityO
-
They call me crazed Ha ha They little knowE
Who are the crazed of Earth or they or ID
They by their greed of gold urged to and froE
For petty pleasures bending God's soul lowE
I seeking for my star about the skyD
-
When it is found when it is found how greatU
Will be the wonder of these blind and madV
How great will be the wonder and the hateU
Waking to see the glorious truth too lateU
Will he too see his error and be sadV
-
The wind sweeps weirdly o'er the heaven to nightW
Weirdly and black as though from guilty deedsX
From some sad shipwreck it has taken flightW
Leaving the drowning in their direful plightW
Leaving the drown'd low waving in the weedsX
-
No stars no stars again Oh woe againY
Night drowns me in its darkness and its gloomZ
And I must crouch amidst the wind and rainA2
Without one hope gleam lightening my painA2
All things are leagued to darken down my doomZ
-
Perchance it is that I am growing weakM
And faint with wandering afar afarF
And my dim eyes see not the thing I seekM
And yet I must not ask I must not speakM
Nor tell the secret of the Saviour starF
-
No dumb dumb I shall set me down to scanB2
Each twinkling orb that rolleth up through spaceN
Hesper heaven's loveliest leading up the vanB2
To morrow yes to morrow I shall watch and manB2
Shall see this wonder when I reach the placeN
-
Will the babe know me ope its sweet blue eyesR
And stretch its little arms to clasp me roundC2
Ah yes God will send knowledge from the skiesR
In pity for my prayers and tears and sighsR
Angels will sing for joy that I have foundC2
My treasure and he he will hear the soundC2
-
Cold cold it is the wind is bitter chillD2
And the rain falls like curses on my headE2
No no not curses for the drops say stillD2
That there's an end to sorrow and all illD2
Flows from us like the water down a hillD2
The star shall shine and all the clouds be spedE2
-
-
-
The sought for Star uprose upon the deadE2
