Far far away over land and seaA
When Winter comes with his cold cold breathB
And chills the flowers to the sleep of deathB
Far far away over land and seaA
Like a band of spirits the Passage birds fleeA
-
Round the old grey spire in the evening calmC
No more they circle in sportive gleeA
Hearing the hum of the vesper psalmD
And the swell of the organ so far belowE
But far far away over land and seaA
In the still mid air the swift Passage birds goE
-
Over the earth that is scarcely seenF
Through the curtain of vapour that waves betweenF
O'er city and hamlet o'er hill and plainG
O'er forest green and o'er mountain hoarH
They flit like shadows and pass the shoreH
And wing their way o'er the pathless mainG
-
There is no rest for the weary wingI
No quivering bough where the feet can clingI
To the North to the South to the East to the WestJ
The ocean lies with its heaving breastJ
Within it without it there is no restJ
-
The tempest gathers beneath them farK
The Wind god rides on his battle carK
And the roar of the thunder the lightning flashL
Break on the waves with a sullen crashL
But Silence reigns where the Passage birds flyM
And o'er them stretches the clear blue skyM
-
The day wears out and the starry nightN
Hushes the world to sleep to sleepO
The dew shower falls in the still moonlightN
And none wake now save those who weepO
But rustling on through the starry nightN
Like a band of spirits the Passage birds fleeA
Cleaving the darkness above the seaA
Swift and straight as an arrow's flightN
Is the wind their guide through the trackless skyM
For here there's no landmark to travel byM
-
The first faint streak of the morning glowsP
Like the feeble blush on the budding roseP
And in long grey lines the clouds divideQ
And march away with retreating NightN
Whilst the bright gleams of victorious LightN
Follow them goldenly far and wideQ
And when the mists have all pass'd awayR
And left the heavens serene and clearS
As an eye that has never shed a tearT
And the universe basks in the smile of DayR
Dreamy and still and the sleepy breezeU
Lazily moves o'er the glassy seasU
The Passage birds flit o'er the disc of noonV
Like shadows across a mirror's faceW
For now their journey wanes apaceW
And the realms of Summer they'll enter soonV
-
The land looms far through the waters blueX
The Land of Promise the Land of RestJ
Through cloud and storm they have travell'd trueX
And joy thrills now in each throbbing breastJ
Down they sink with a wheeling flightN
Whilst the song of birds comes floating highM
And they pass the lark in the sunny skyM
But down without pausing down they flyM
Their travel is over their Summer shines brightN
