O well I mind the olden timeA
The sweet sweet olden timeA
When I did long for eve all dayB
And watch'd upon the new mown grassC
The shadows slowly eastward passC
And o'er the meadows glide awayB
Till I could steal with heart elateD
Unto the little cottage gateD
In the sweet sweet olden timeA
-
O well I mind the olden timeA
The sweet sweet olden timeA
How all the night I long'd for mornE
And bless'd the thrush whose early noteF
The silver chords of silence smoteF
With greetings to the day new bornE
For then again with heart elateF
I hoped to meet her at the gateF
In the sweet sweet olden timeA
-
But now hath pass'd the olden timeA
That sweet sweet olden timeA
And there is neither morn nor nightF
That bears a freight of hopes and fearsG
To bless my soul in coming yearsG
With any harvest of delightF
For never more with heart elateF
Can I behold her at the gateF
As in the sweet sweet olden timeA
-
For the sake of that dear olden timeA
That sweet sweet olden timeA
I look forth ever sadly stillH
And hope the time may come againI
When Life hath borne its meed of painJ
And stoutly struggled up the hillH
When I once more with heart elateF
May meet her at another gateF
Beyond the blighting breath of fateF
That chill'd the sweet sweet olden timeA
