I stood on the Land's End alone and stillA
Man might have been unmade for no frail traceB
Of mortal labour startled the wild placeB
And only sea mews with their wailing shrillA
Circled beneath me over the dark seaC
Flashing the waves with pinions snowy whiteD
That glimmer'd faintly in the gloomy lightD
Betwixt the foaming furrows constantlyC
It was a mighty cape that proudly roseE
Above the world of waters high and steepF
With many a scar and fissure fathoms deepF
Upon whose ledges lodged the endless snowsE
A noble brow to a firm founded worldG
That at the limits of its empire stoodH
Fronting the ocean in its roughest moodI
And all its fury calmly backward hurl'dG
The Midnight Sun rose like an angry godJ
Girt round with clouds through which a lurid glowK
Fev'rously trembled to the waves belowK
And smote the waters with a fiery rodJ
Above the glory circled up the skyL
Fainter and fainter to the sullen greyM
Till the black under drift of clouds awayM
Went with the gathering wind and let it dieL
A moaning sound swept o'er the heaving oceanN
Toss'd hoarsely on from angry crest to crestO
Like groans from a great soul in its unrestO
Stirring the ranks of men to fierce commotionN
My longing vision measured the wide wasteP
This cannot be the end of things that manQ
Should see his path lead on so short a spanQ
And then the unstable ocean mock his hasteP
Better have stay'd where I could still look onR
And see a sturdy world to bear my feetS
Than thus outstrip the multitude to cheatS
Earth of its knowledge and here find it goneT
A Shadow rose betwixt me and the skyL
Out of the Ocean as it seem'd that setU
A perfect shape before mine eyes and yetU
Hid not the sky that did behind it lieL
But through its misty substance all things grewV
Faint pale and ghostly and the risen sunN
Gleam'd like a fiery globe half quench'd and dunN
Through the sere shadow which the spectre threwV
It answer'd me Man this is not the endW
Progression ceaseth not until the goalX
Of all perfection stop the running soulX
Whither through life its aspirations tendW
Spring from thy height then for till thou art freeC
From earth thy course is narrow and restrain'dY
I said No Spirit nought were thus attain'dY
Better pause here than perish in the seaC
Man can but do his utmost there's a lengthZ
He cannot overleap The spectre smiledA2
Then trust to me for though the sea be wildA2
It cannot shake the sinews of my strengthZ
Within my breast the fearful fall asleepF
And wake out of their terrors calm and stillA
Having outstripp'd the speed of time and illA
And pass'd unconsciously the stormy deepF
Quicker and quicker drew I in my breathB2
If there be land beyond receive me nowC2
I'll trust in thee but Spirit who art thouC2
The winds bore on a murmur I am DeathB2
