Across the mountains and the hillsA
Across the valleys and the swelling seasB
By lakes and rivers whose deep murmur fillsA
Earth's dreams with sweet prophetic melodiesB
Together have we come unto this placeC
And here we say farewell a little spaceC
-
You backward turning through the landD
To tarry 'mid its beauty yet awhileE
I o'er the River to another strandD
With cheerful heart so part we with a smileE
Shall space have any power o'er god like soulsF
Love shall bridge o'er the stream that 'twixt us rollsF
-
Together wend we to the tideG
And as the first wave wets my foot we partH
E'en now methinks I see the other sideG
And though the stream be swift a steady heartH
And stalwart arm shall quell its cold dark wavesI
Faith falters not e'en when the tempest ravesI
-
Dark stream flowing so blackly onJ
Thy turbid billows roll o'er golden sandsK
Beneath the surface all thy fear is goneL
And precious gems fill full the diver's handsK
Yet how the heart lists breathless for the roarM
Of billows plashing on the other shoreM
-
The other shore Oh thou dim LandD
Hid by faint mists from the spent swimmer's eyesN
Until upon the sloping bank he standD
Mute in the light of Eden mysteriesB
Thou golden Ophir of Youth's spirit dreamO
Shall I then reach thee through this turbid streamO
-
Friend quail not This same gloomy tideG
Rolling its fearful breakers to the shoreM
Shall be transform'd upon the other sideG
Into the crystal Life stream shaded o'erP
By Paradisal groves whose mellow fruitQ
Shall heal the sorrows of the destituteQ
-
These ghostly vapours brooding lowR
Shall melt to sunny glories o'er my headS
And through them shall the golden city glowR
Whither I hasten singing angel ledS
Friend there is but a cloud veil 'twixt us and the lightT
One step beyond and Heaven is in our sightT
-
Now the stream laps my vesture hemU
Back thou from my sad bosom to the worldV
Leaving me here this current cold to stemU
Soon from thy sight shall I be swiftly whirl'dV
Into the mystic darkness never fearW
God's hand shall guide me unto vision clearW
-
Already thou art growing dimX
And distant on the fast receding shoreM
The tide is strong but still I trust in HimX
And know that I shall safely struggle o'erP
For now the plash on yonder shore I hearY
Amid sweet angel voices calm and clearW
