HARK some wild trumpeter some strange musicianA
Hovering unseen in air vibrates capricious tunes to nightB
-
I hear thee trumpeter listening alert I catch thy notesC
Now pouring whirling like a tempest round meD
Now low subdued now in the distance lostE
-
-
Come nearer bodiless one haply in thee resoundsC
Some dead composer haply thy pensive lifeF
Was fill'd with aspirations high unform'd idealsC
Waves oceans musical chaotically surgingG
That now ecstatic ghost close to me bending thy cornet echoingG
pealingG
Gives out to no one's ears but mine but freely gives to mineH
That I may thee translateI
-
-
Blow trumpeter free and clear I follow theeD
While at thy liquid prelude glad sereneJ
The fretting world the streets the noisy hours of day withdrawK
A holy calm descends like dew upon meD
I walk in cool refreshing night the walks of ParadiseC
I scent the grass the moist air and the rosesC
Thy song expands my numb'd imbonded spirit thou freest launchestI
meD
Floating and basking upon Heaven's lakeG
-
-
Blow again trumpeter and for my sensuous eyesC
Bring the old pageants show the feudal worldI
-
What charm thy music works thou makest pass before meD
Ladies and cavaliers long dead barons are in their castle halls theL
troubadours are singingG
Arm'd knights go forth to redress wrongs some in quest of the HolyD
GrailM
I see the tournament I see the contestants encased in heavy armorN
seated on stately champing horsesC
I hear the shouts the sounds of blows and smiting steelO
I see the Crusaders' tumultuous armies Hark how the cymbals clangG
Lo where the monks walk in advance bearing the cross on highP
-
-
Blow again trumpeter and for thy themeQ
Take now the enclosing theme of all the solvent and the settingG
Love that is pulse of all the sustenace and the pangG
The heart of man and woman all for loveR
No other theme but love knitting enclosing all diffusing loveR
-
O how the immortal phantoms crowd around meD
I see the vast alembic ever working I see and know the flames thatI
heat the worldI
The glow the blush the beating hearts of loversC
So blissful happy some and some so silent dark and nigh to deathS
Love that is all the earth to lovers Love that mocks time andI
spaceC
Love that is day and night Love that is sun and moon and starsC
Love that is crimson sumptuous sick with perfumeT
No other words but words of love no other thought but LoveR
-
-
Blow again trumpeter conjure war's Wild alarumsC
Swift to thy spell a shuddering hum like distant thunder rollsC
Lo where the arm'd men hasten Lo mid the clouds of dust the glintI
of bayonetsC
I see the grime faced cannoniers I mark the rosy flash amid theL
smoke I hear the cracking of the gunsC
Nor war alone thy fearful music song wild player brings everyD
sight of fearU
The deeds of ruthless brigands rapine murder I hear the cries forV
helpW
I see ships foundering at sea I behold on deck and below deck theL
terrible tableauxC
-
-
O trumpeter methinks I am myself the instrument thou playestI
Thou melt'st my heart my brain thou movest drawest changest themX
at willY
And now thy sullen notes send darkness through meD
Thou takest away all cheering light all hopeZ
I see the enslaved the overthrown the hurt the opprest of theL
whole earthA2
I feel the measureless shame and humiliation of my race it becomesC
all mineH
Mine too the revenges of humanity the wrongs of ages baffled feudsC
and hatredsC
Utter defeat upon me weighs all lost the foe victoriousC
Yet 'mid the ruins Pride colossal stands unshaken to the lastI
Endurance resolution to the lastI
-
-
Now trumpeter for thy closeC
Vouchsafe a higher strain than any yetI
Sing to my soul renew its languishing faith and hopeZ
Rouse up my slow belief give me some vision of the futureN
Give me for once its prophecy and joyB2
-
O glad exulting culminating songG
A vigor more than earth's is in thy notesC
Marches of victory man disenthrall'd the conqueror at lastI
Hymns to the universal God from universal Man all joyB2
A reborn race appears a perfect World all joyB2
Women and Men in wisdom innocence and health all joyB2
Riotous laughing bacchanals fill'd with joyB2
-
War sorrow suffering gone The rank earth purged nothing but joyB2
leftI
The ocean fill'd with joy the atmosphere all joyB2
Joy Joy in freedom worship love Joy in the ecstacy of lifeF
Enough to merely be Enough to breatheC2
Joy Joy all over JoyB2
