Vain Transient World Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIJ KLKL

Vain transient World what charms are thineA
And what do mortals in thee seeB
That they should worship at thy shrineA
And sacrifice their all to theeB
-
Thy brightest gifts thy happiest hoursC
Fly past on pinions of the windD
They fade like blooms upon the flowersC
And leave a painful want behindD
-
Thou art a road though not of spaceE
Which rich and poor alike must treadF
Thy starting point we cannot traceE
Thine end the country of the deadF
-
A pathway paved with want and woeG
With pleasures painful incompleteH
Like stones upon the way belowG
Which wound the weary pilgrim's feetH
-
Thou'rt hedged with visions of despairI
With words of hate with looks of scornJ
Like wayside thorns which pierce and tearI
The fainting traveller weak and wornJ
-
Relentless odium's bitter illK
Cold disregard thy ways infestL
Like wintry blasts that chill and killK
The very heart within the breastL
