The St. Lawrence Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DCDCCC EFEFGH CICIFF CJCJCC KLKLMM

Though like Ulysses fam'd of oldA
I travell'd or the wandering JewB
No nobler sight could I beholdA
Than one which daily meets my viewB
This mighty stream my country's prideC
St Lawrence' broad majestic tideC
-
By Babylonia's waters 'mongD
Unwonted scenes disconsolateC
Their harps upon the willows hungD
The Jewish exiles weeping sateC
Recall'd the river of their landC
And yearn'd to tread its winding strandC
-
When stern Elisha bade him laveE
Seven times in Jordan and be cleanF
His Syrian upland's flashing waveE
Seem'd better to the DamasceneF
Albana Pharpar far excelG
He said the streams of IsraelH
-
In India Ganges was rever'dC
In Egypt worshipp'd was the NileI
To Romans Tiber was endear'dC
From Apennine to Sacred IsleI
And Rhine and Danube Thames and RhoneF
A people's votive love have knownF
-
And we to this imposing floodC
A cordial homage needs must payJ
Who in the solemn night have stoodC
Upon its banks and day by dayJ
Been fill'd with gladness to beholdC
Its floor of silver flush'd with goldC
-
It brings the nations to our martsK
It bears our commerce to the seaL
Has virtue too to cleanse our heartsK
And make our spirits strong and freeL
It flows our struggling lives to blessM
With volume grace and cheerfulnessM
