The Quebec Exodus Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABABCD EFEFEFGG HIHIHIJJ

Why should we leave the soil our fathers clearedA
And lifelong tilled with patient loving handsB
Why should we leave the homes our fathers rearedA
And seek strange dwellings in unhallowed landsB
Why should we leave the shrines where they reveredA
Their guardian God and break the golden bandsB
That bind us to the ashes of our siresC
Their haunts their hearthstones and their altar firesD
-
Is it that now no longer from our doorsE
The forest stretches with its gloom profoundF
That they who first set foot upon these shoresE
Increase and multiply and hedge us roundF
Co heritors of the exhaustless storesE
Of natural wealth that more and more aboundF
Because of brethren of a differing speechG
From whom we learn and whom perhaps we teachG
-
It was not thus our conquering race aroseH
It was not thus our copious language grewI
The Saxon mingled with his Celtic foesH
The Norman brought to both a spirit newI
Not thus we read th' heroic tale of thoseH
Who built the younger Britains o'er the blueI
'Twas here and there a handful in the earthJ
Prevailing not by numbers but by worthJ
