The Doctor Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IBIB JKLK MNMN GOGO APAP

He bent above our darling's bedA
When her life was ebbing lowB
And in his serious look we readA
The truth we feared to knowB
-
We knew a slender thread was allC
That held her now we sawD
The dark portentous shadow fallC
And near and nearer drawD
-
Our hopes were centred all in himE
We stood with bated breathF
As pitiful and calm and grimE
He fought and fought with DeathF
-
We hung upon the desperate fightG
And saw in him combinedH
The tiger's stealth the lion's mightG
The man's superior mindH
-
We saw the fearful hate he boreI
His old relentless foeB
His beautiful compassion forI
The one we cherished soB
-
No mortal ever waged aloneJ
A conflict so severeK
The high souled stainless championL
Finds heavenly succor nearK
-
Legions of angels to his aidM
His pure devotion broughtN
Celestial strength his spirit swayedM
'Twas Life that in him foughtN
-
The awful stillness of the nightG
The long and bitter hoursO
It seemed that Time had stayed his flightG
To watch the battling pow'rsO
-
And ere the ghastly night had fledA
He conquered in the strifeP
And gently took the slender threadA
And drew her back to lifeP
