The Battle Of Chateauguay Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABBCCCC DEDFECECC GHGHHHHHH IJIJJKJKK LMLMMMMMM NONOOHOHH

There is a valley where the wheat fields waveA
In autumn like a gold ymolten seaB
There is a river whose cool waters laveA
Sweet scented gardens groves and rolling leaB
And homes of people worthy to be freeB
There is a name whose sound is like a songC
On lips of its own maidens ChateauguayC
Yet mighty as the combat of the strongC
And glorious as the march of Freedom over WrongC
-
And here they fought and each encountered tenD
With war steed and artillery arrayedE
But righteous was their cause and they were menD
Dark plumes of Iroquois and Scotia's plaidF
But most the brothers of the arm which madeE
Napoleon terrible with triumphingC
Between the foe and heaven they knelt and prayedE
Then rising heard their leader's summons ringC
Such is our duty to our God now for our KingC
-
Again they knelt but now 'twas not to prayG
A murd'rous volley crashes from their lineH
But tenfold thunder mocks their mimic frayG
From furious gun and flashing carabineH
Like roaring billows and the driving brineH
The glut is backward hurled Hurrah 'tis vainH
The vengeful fools like men who war in wineH
Intoxicate with madness overfainH
For blood have fired o'erhead and not a man is slainH
-
Meantime the valiant hero of the fightI
Upon his flank had foiled another foeJ
Who now retreating back in broken plightI
Dismayed the rest with vision of their woeJ
To see and seize the leader is not slowJ
He rushes to his buglers bids them fastK
Withdraw into the woods advance and blowJ
As for your lives this effort were the lastK
Yea blow as Britain's throne depended on your blastK
-
Away they ran and wheeling sharply blewL
The wide mouthed din obedient to his wordM
Afar to north and south the echoes flewL
The Indian child was startled and the birdM
Affrighted from its peaceful nest it stirredM
The sluggish waters of the swart OutardeM
Aghast the Southron a great army heardM
And fled before the visionary swordM
As fled the Syrian host deceived by Israel's LordM
-
Back cravens back in ignominy flyN
Back to your homes your country and your slavesO
But thou art holy ground and ne'er shall dieN
Thy virtue and thy fame while still Time savesO
His best And still shall states when conquest cravesO
From thee the salutary lesson learnH
The poet call thy heroes from their gravesO
To thee the warrior point the patriot turnH
Thou last of Freedom's fields Canadian BannockburnH
