When conquering Summer stalks the streetA
His eyes are eyes of fireB
The pavement burns beneath his feetA
Men droop before his ireC
But yonder out upon the landD
His manners are not theseE
He is a courtier mild and blandD
Beneath the maple treesE
-
He throws his buckler on the grassF
Unclasps his sheath d bladeG
He doffs his helmet and cuirassF
And lounges in the shadeG
His pennon fastened to a boughH
Is fluttering in the breezeF
He is at home and happy nowH
Beneath the maple treesF
-
No furious rage disturbs his breastI
No fever heats his brainJ
Right cheerily he takes his restI
And views his glad domainJ
His lady seated by his sideK
His children on his kneesF
His heart expands with joy and prideK
Beneath the maple treesF
-
He hears the happy farmer folkL
Who toss the fragrant hayM
Blessings upon him they invokeL
And beg of him to stayM
The music of the feathered choirsF
The murmur of the beesF
Are sounds of which he never tiresF
Beneath the maple treesF
-
He hums a sweet melodious tuneN
His hand a garland weavesF
He talks the while he feasts at noonN
His laughter shakes the leavesF
He tells of conquests in the southO
Of triumphs overseasF
Of realms redeemed and deeds of drouthO
Beneath the maple treesF
-
He shouts and holds his jolly sidesF
And strikes his lusty thighP
To think of how Sir Winter hidesF
His face when he is nighP
Or how with city exquisitesF
His swagger disagreesF
Thus glad Sir Summer gaily sitsF
Beneath the maple treesF
-
I know where I can find his bowerB
Upon a wooded hillQ
Where I can pluck his favorite flowerB
And bathe within his rillQ
And thither I will take my flightR
And loiter at my easeF
And pay my homage to the KnightR
Beneath the maple treesF
