| And lavish of his largesses of light | B |
| Become a miser in his latter days | A |
| An avaricious dotard alter'd quite | B |
| Is he the same that all the summer long | C |
| Strew'd with ungrudging hand his gleaming gold | D |
| Can such ill grace to high estate belong | C |
| Can bright be dim can warm so soon be cold | D |

| Ay but he goes his parsimonious way | E |
| And hoards his shining treasures from the view | F |
| And garners up his riches 'gainst the day | E |
| When Earth the prodigal shall beg anew | F |
| Then to her need he'll give no niggard dole | G |
