Scotland: A Jacobite's Lament Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Where are those days O CaledonA
So glorious and brightB
In which thy star resplendent shoneA
With passing lustrous lightB
Alas alas those happier daysC
Are shrouded in the pastD
Thy glory was like that of GreeceE
Too bright it shone to lastD
-
Where are those knightly heroes boldF
Those champions of the rightB
That bore the shield and couched the lanceG
So valiant in the fightB
Whether for king and country's wealH
In freedom's cause they stroveI
Or courted glory and renownA
To win their lady loveJ
-
The Wallace nobly lived and diedK
To save his land from shameL
The royal Bruce as nobly foughtM
Her freedom to reclaimL
How would their generous hearts have mournedN
Could they have pierced the veilH
And peering into future yearsO
Have read thy woful taleH
-
Then patriots raised the royal flagP
Around the noble GraemesO
And dyed the heather with their bloodQ
For Scotland and King JamesO
A wreath of honour nobly wonA
Encircled then thy browR
How is that garland once so greenA
So sadly faded nowR
-
Now mercenary lust hath ta'enA
The place of chivalryS
And that devoted Faith of yoreT
Is gone for bigotryS
What wonder then that to my eyeU
The tear will sometimes startV
What wonder that the clouds of griefW
Hang heavy o'er my heartV
