Motive Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEDE FGFG HIHI JKJK

Worthless the man who works he knows not whyA
Whom naught inspires to his puny planB
Who seeming plays his part instinctivelyC
Soulless and falsely designated manB
-
Wicked who works from wish of worldly gainD
His soul surrendered to th'accurs d lustE
Of pleasure partial briefly to remainD
Of treasure liable to moth and rustE
-
Foolish and vain is he whose motive fameF
Ruled by desire of honor and renownG
And fondly courting Fortune's fickle DameF
To day she smiles to morrow she will frownG
-
But virtuous noble prompted from aboveH
Preluding now the perfect life againI
Is he whose only inspiration loveH
Love to his God and to his fellow menI
-
For love is naught but God's own nature givenJ
In partial measure down to man to comeK
The sole delight of earth the key to heavenJ
Of all the virtues centre source and sumK
