Hope Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GEHE IJIK AEAE JLJL

Oh why should sorrow wound the heartA
And rob the soul of restB
Why is misfortune's bitter dartA
Allowed to pierce the breastB
-
We dare not ask 'tis heaven's decreeC
While faring here belowD
Man's bark is tossed upon the seaC
Of trouble grief and woeD
-
But Mercy holdeth forth a lightE
Upon the waves to shineF
And cheer him in the darkest nightE
The star of Hope divineF
-
Enabled thus he looks beforeG
And sees Oh joyful sightE
The waves subside the storm is o'erH
The sky is clear and brightE
-
What comfort 'tis when cares annoyI
To know they are from OneJ
Whose hand dispenses peace and joyI
As well as grief and painK
-
Then cherish hope despondent heartA
With strength renew the fightE
And God will gladness yet impartA
Thy darkness turn to lightE
-
The dreary winter soon is doneJ
And then the month of MayL
The clouds which now obscure the sunJ
Will soon have passed awayL
