Heat Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABACABDD EFGFEEHI BEBEBEEE EJEJEJKK

The fickle sun that had the earth caress'dA
And quickened all her amorous desireB
And brought fresh roses to adorn her breastA
Now spurned her in the madness of his ireC
A haze of heat half hid the mountain's crestA
The very river seemed of liquid fireB
The air was flame the town a stifling paleD
And all the land was like a Hinnom's ValeD
-
I thought of Hagar and what she enduredE
Faint in the desert driv'n from Sara's sightF
Of angry Jonah underneath his gourdG
Grown in a night and withered in a nightF
Of the sun stricken lad Elisha curedE
For the good hospitable ShunammiteE
And of the fiery furnace made to glowH
For Shadrach Meshach and AbednegoI
-
I called to mind Boccaccio's tale of herB
Left on a sun scorched roof and like to dieE
And I beheld the Ancient MarinerB
Becalmed beneath his hot and copper skyE
And heard a long forgotten travellerB
Speak from a page which made my childhood sighE
And tell of horrid climes by God accurstE
And men and horses perishing of thirstE
-
And to myself I said Is this the landE
Where freezing cold claims sometimes half the yearJ
Is this the region where the streams are spannedE
With floors of azure crystal hard and clearJ
And all the snow enveloped mountains standE
Like hoary chiefs majestic and austereJ
Was't here we saw so late King Winter sternK
And will he shortly here again returnK
