Death Of Sir John Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABBCBCC DEDEEFGFF HIHJJKJKK LMLMMNMON

What news to all alike brings startling sorrowA
And he is dead the vigorous chieftain deadB
Nor e'en for him would death still brook to morrowA
No more shall followers vaunt and foemen dreadB
No more by him the hot debate be ledB
No more the lively tale the clever jestC
Of him the State's most skilful ablest headB
Albeit not her sternest not her bestC
But such is over now then let his ashes restC
-
When all was anarchy he seized the reinsD
And broke and trained the fiery coursers youngE
And from so many wide and fair domainsD
One great Dominion 'neath his guidance sprungE
Which he made glorious till the nations rungE
With our renown and his immortal nameF
But now his day was o'er his work was doneG
'Twas well He lived to hear his land's acclaimF
And perished in the pride of his Marengo fameF
-
Once more I see him there once more he standsH
Where midst the learned and beautiful he stoodI
Scholars and knights dames statesmen clapped their handsH
Within the glittering hall a thousand viewedJ
And ardent youth drank draughts to him imbrewedJ
With adulation Run is glory's raceK
And this is Death that such a being shouldJ
Who o'er his country soared in pride of placeK
Be mingled with her dust like brutes and idlers baseK
-
Softly sweet River softly by the cliffL
Where in his eyrie the spent eagle sleepsM
Softly beside where o'er one cold and stiffL
A hapless lady her pale vigil keepsM
And come ye mourners very heaven weepsM
With rue and rosemary from far and nearN
From Breton's capes and rude Columbia's steepsM
To spread the shroud upon your hero's bierO
While he who Laurel is will weave the cypress sereN
