At Paardeberg they fellA
Within the Orange StateB
They did their duty wellA
They bravely met their fateB
-
A stubborn fight they madeC
Upon the level plainD
While from the barricadeC
The bullets poured like rainD
-
They fiercely charged the trenchE
They took the outer lineF
Who saw a visage blenchE
Who heard a voice repineF
-
They bore the ruthless fireG
But deadly was the costH
They lived not to retireI
Nor saw their capture lostJ
-
No lustrous deed they wroughtK
To prompt the epic penF
They only bravely foughtK
And gave their lives like menF
-
And yet no hero's fameL
That rings across the seasM
Shall e'er eclipse the nameL
And memory of theseM
-
While suns shall rise and setN
Upon the fatal sceneF
We never shall forgetN
Our Canada's EighteenF
-
And now as Britain weavesO
The garland of her griefP
We place among the leavesO
A blood red maple leafP
