Often when the sun is sinking	B
O'er the mountain's glowing crest	C
When the earth and heaven are linking	B
In that bond of peaceful rest	C
Then the weary city spurning	B
On this grand repose I gaze	D
And my mind in fancy turning	B
Dwells on scenes of childhood's days	D
	-
And I float upon the river	E
At the selfsame time of day	F
When the sparkling waters quiver	E
'Neath the slanting evening ray	F
Day's harsh memories forsaking	B
With its jarring and its jest	C
For the soul is but awaking	B
As the day is lulled to rest	C

Glimpse of even's glory getting	B
As the summer sun serene	G
In his softened splendour setting	B
Gilds the spires of Ste Martine	G
Glimmers through the silent bushes	H
Glances on the birchen stems	I
Casts perchance his fitful blushes	H
On the paddle dripping gems	I
	-
And the hue of gold is deeper	E
On the cornfields by the stream	J
And the sickle of the reaper	E
Flashes brightly in his beam	J
And the fruits of late commencing	B
To indue their glowing tint	K
Richest beauty are enhancing	B
As they catch his gentle glint	K

Now he greets the gaudy dresses	H
Of the lightsome Gallic maids	L
Rivals through their raven tresses	M
Eyes of jet beneath their braids	L
As the peasant party gathers	N
Gaily for the sportive dance	O
As of old have done their fathers	N
In the sunny vales of France	O

But the night is falling thicker	E
And the twilight soon will cease	P
So I paddle on the quicker	E
Past where Beauty reigns with Peace	P
Where the little brooks deliver	E
Water laughing in its glee	Q
Or the murky English River	E
Mingles with the Chateauguay	B
