Written In MontrealA
-
Often when the sun is sinkingB
O'er the mountain's glowing crestC
When the earth and heaven are linkingB
In that bond of peaceful restC
Then the weary city spurningB
On this grand repose I gazeD
And my mind in fancy turningB
Dwells on scenes of childhood's daysD
-
And I float upon the riverE
At the selfsame time of dayF
When the sparkling waters quiverE
'Neath the slanting evening rayF
Day's harsh memories forsakingB
With its jarring and its jestC
For the soul is but awakingB
As the day is lulled to restC
-
Glimpse of even's glory gettingB
As the summer sun sereneG
In his softened splendour settingB
Gilds the spires of Ste MartineG
Glimmers through the silent bushesH
Glances on the birchen stemsI
Casts perchance his fitful blushesH
On the paddle dripping gemsI
-
And the hue of gold is deeperE
On the cornfields by the streamJ
And the sickle of the reaperE
Flashes brightly in his beamJ
And the fruits of late commencingB
To indue their glowing tintK
Richest beauty are enhancingB
As they catch his gentle glintK
-
Now he greets the gaudy dressesH
Of the lightsome Gallic maidsL
Rivals through their raven tressesM
Eyes of jet beneath their braidsL
As the peasant party gathersN
Gaily for the sportive danceO
As of old have done their fathersN
In the sunny vales of FranceO
-
But the night is falling thickerE
And the twilight soon will ceaseP
So I paddle on the quickerE
Past where Beauty reigns with PeaceP
Where the little brooks deliverE
Water laughing in its gleeQ
Or the murky English RiverE
Mingles with the ChateauguayB
