A German aeroplane flew over Greek territory dropping a bomb which killed a shepherdA
-
-
'Sitting on a stone a ShepherdA
Stone and Shepherd sleepingB
Under the high blue Attic skyC
Along the green monotonyD
Grey sheep creeping creeping'C
-
Deep down on the hill and valleyD
At the bottom of the sunshineE
Like great Ships in clearest waterF
Water holding anchored ShadowsG
Water without wave or rippleH
Sunshine deep and clear and heavyD
Sunshine like a booming bellI
Made of purest golden metalH
White Ships heavy in the skyC
Sleep with anchored shadowJ
-
Pipe a song in that still airK
And the song would be of crystalH
Snapped in silence or a bronze vaseL
Smooth and graceful curved and shiningC
Tell an old tale or a historyD
It would seem a slow ProcessionM
Full of gestures limbs and torsoJ
White and rounded in the sunlightN
-
'Sitting on a stone a ShepherdA
Stone and Shepherd sleepingC
Like a fragment of old marbleH
Dug up from the hillside shadow'A
-
In the sunshine deep and soundlessJ
Came a faint metallic hummingC
In the sunshine clear and heavyD
Came a speck a speck of shadowA
Shepherd lift your head and listenM
Listen to that humming ShadowA
-
'Sitting on a stone the ShepherdA
Stone and Shepherd sleepingC
In a sleep dreamless as waterF
Water in a white glass beakerF
Clear pellucid without shadowA
Underneath a sky blue crystalH
Sees his grey sheep creeping'C
-
In the sunshine clear and heavyD
Shadow fled a dark hand downwardA
In the sunshine deep and soundlessJ
Burst a star dropt thing of thunderF
Smoked the burnt blue air's torn veilingC
Drooping softly round the hillsideA
-
Boomed the silence in returningC
To the crater in the hillsideA
To the red earth fresh and bleedingC
To the mangled heap remainingC
Far away that humming ShadowA
Vanished in the azure distanceJ
-
'Sitting on a stone no ShepherdA
Stone and Shepherd sleepingC
But across the hill and valleyD
Grey sheep creeping creepingC
Standing carven on the sky lineE
Scattering in the open distanceJ
Free in no man's keeping'C
