The mind of the people is like mudA
From which arise strange and beautiful thingsB
But mud is none the less mudA
Though it bear orchids and prophesying KingsB
Dreams trees and water's bright babblingsB
-
It has found form and colour and lightC
The cold glimmer of the ice wrapped PolesB
It has called a far off glow ArcturusB
And some pale weeds lilies of the valleyD
-
It has imagined Virgil Helen and CassandraE
The sack of Troy and the weeping for HectorF
Rearing stark up 'mid all this beautyD
In the thick dull neck of AjaxB
-
There is a dark Pine in LaplandG
And the great figured Horn of the ReindeerH
Moving soundlessly across the snowI
Is its twin brother double dreamedJ
In the mind of a far off peopleK
-
It is strange that a little mudA
Should echo with sounds syllables and lettersB
Should rise up and call a mountain PopocatapetlK
And a green leafed wood OleanderF
-
These are the ghosts of invisible thingsB
There is no Lapland no Helen and no HectorF
And the Reindeer is a darkening of the brainL
And Oleander is but OleanderF
-
Mary Magdalena and the vine Lachryma ChristiD
Were like ghosts up the ghost of VesuviusB
As I sat and drank wine with the soldiersB
As I sat in the Inn on the mountainM
Watching the shadows in my mindN
-
The mind of the people is like mudA
Where are the imperishable thingsB
The ghosts that flicker in the brainL
Silent women orchids and prophesying KingsB
Dreams trees and water's bright babblingsB
