Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CADA ADAD EDDD FDDD DGDG HDDD

When I was but thirteen or soA
I went into a golden landB
Chimborazo CotopaxiA
Took me by the handB
-
My father died my brother tooC
They passed like fleeting dreamsA
I stood where PopocatapetlD
In the sunlight gleamsA
-
I dimly heard the master's voiceA
And boys far off at playD
Chimborazo CotopaxiA
Had stolen me awayD
-
I walked in a great golden dreamE
To and fro from schoolD
Shining PopocatapetlD
The dusty streets did ruleD
-
I walked home with a gold dark boyF
And never a word I'd sayD
Chimborazo CotopaxiD
Had taken my speech awayD
-
I gazed entranced upon his faceD
Fairer than any flowerG
O shining PopocatapetlD
It was thy magic hourG
-
The houses people traffic seemedH
Thin fading dreams by dayD
Chimborazo CotopaxiD
They had stolen my soul awayD

Brenda Warner: I woke up this morning with the words of the first verse of this poem in my head!!!!!
I have remembered it a few times before but then it fades away again for a few more years. I had to learn a poem by heart so I could recite it by heart to my class in Lucas Vale Primary School, in S.E. London, about 70 years ago. I chose this one. Children learnt poetry in school many years ago. When I got up I rushed to my pc and looked it up. I had forgotten who the poet was. The video of W.j. Turner reciting his poem was brilliantly created and I cried as all the words came back to me. THANKYOU.
Cheryl Hutchinson: It has always been one of my favourite poems made more so because I am from the island of Barbados and we have a sugar plantation house called Chimborazo House which is rather unusual. It is situated in the highest and the most lush part of the island.
