The Temple Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABACC DEDFF GHGII JKJCC LMNOO PQPRREnter the temple beautiful The house not made with hands | A |
Rain washed and green wind swept and clean | B |
Beneath the blue it stands | A |
And no cathedral anywhere | C |
Seemeth so holy or so fair | C |
- | |
It hath no heavy gabled roof no door with lock and key | D |
No window bars shut out the stars | E |
The aisles are wide and free | D |
Here through the night each altar light | F |
Is but a moon beam silver white | F |
- | |
Silently as the temple grew at Solomon's command | G |
Still as things seem within a dream | H |
This rose from out the land | G |
And all the pillars grey and high | I |
Lifted their arches to the sky | I |
- | |
Here is the perfume of the leaves the incense of the pines | J |
The magic scent that hath been pent | K |
Within the tangled vines | J |
No censor filled with spices rare | C |
E'er swung such sweetness on the air | C |
- | |
And all the golden gloom of it holdeth no haunting fear | L |
For it is blessed and giveth rest | M |
To those who enter here | N |
Here in the evening who can know | O |
But God Himself walks to and fro | O |
- | |
And music past all mastering within the chancel rings | P |
None could desire a sweeter choir | Q |
Than this that soars and sings | P |
Till far the scented shadows creep | R |
And quiet darkness bringeth sleep | R |
