We used to fear the lonely roadA
That twisted round the hillB
It dipped down to the river wayC
And passed the haunted millB
And then crept on until it reachedD
The churchyard green and stillB
-
No pipers ever took that roadA
No gipsies brown and gayC
No shepherds with their gentle flocksE
No loads of scented hayC
No market waggons jingled byF
On any SaturdayG
-
The dog wood there flung wide its starsH
In April silvery sweetI
The squirrels crossed that path all dayC
On tiny flying feetI
The wild brown rabbits knew each turnJ
Each shadowy safe retreatI
-
And there the golden belted beeG
Sang his sweet summer songK
The crickets chirped there to the moonL
With steady note and strongK
Till cold and silence wrapped them roundM
When autumn nights grew longK
-
But oh they brought the lonely deadN
Along that quiet wayC
With strange procession dark and slowO
On sunny days and greyC
We used to watch them wonder eyedP
Nor care again to playC
-
And we forgot each merry jestQ
The birds on bush and treeG
Silenced the song within their throatsR
And with us watched to seeG
The soft slow passing out of sightS
Of that dark mysteryG
-
-
-
We fear no more the lonely roadA
That winds around the hillB
Far from the busy world's highwayC
And the gods' slow grinding millB
It only seems a peaceful pathT
Pleasant and green and stillB
