The Angel Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH GEGE IJIJ KLML NONO ABAB PQPQ

Down the white ward with slow unswerving treadA
He came ere break of dayB
A cowl was drawn about his down bent headA
His misty robes were greyB
-
And no man even knew that he went byC
None saw or heard him passD
Softly he moved as clouds drift down the skyC
Or shadows cross the grassD
-
Close to a little bed where one lay lowE
At last he took his standF
And touched the head that tossed in restless woeE
With gentle outstretched handF
-
When bitterness he said is at an endG
And joy grows far and dimH
I am the angel whom the Lord doth sendG
To lead men on to HimH
-
Past the innumerable stars my friendG
Past all the winds that blowE
We too must travel to our journey's endG
Arise And let us goE
-
Stay Stay the other cried I know thy faceI
Death is thy dreaded nameJ
Nay I am known as 'Love' in that far placeI
He said from whence I cameJ
-
But still the other cried with moan and tearK
I fear the dark and theeL
There is no dark the angel said nor fearM
For those who go with meL
-
There is no loneliness and nevermoreN
The shadow haunted nightO
When we pass out beyond Life's swinging doorN
The road he said is brightO
-
Then backward slipped the cowl from off his headA
Downward the robe of greyB
A radiant presence by the lowly bedA
Greeted the breaking dayB
-
-
-
Within the long white ward one lay aloneP
None watched by him awhileQ
But some who passed him said in whispered toneP
See on his lips the smileQ
